Do you know the words that come next? …..
“If I go there will be trouble, and if I stay it will be double ….”
That was my Clashing dilemma this morning! One of the things on my Bucket List is to complete an Ironman 70.3 triathlon event. So I’ve been training with loved ones who have completed both full Ironman events and 70.3 events. (I feel like a pilot fish along for the ride with the big fish).
Anyway, this morning I was supposed to participate in a long cycle South of the freeway with the big fish. Only problem was I woke up not feeling crash hot. A decision had to made quickly. Was I going to go or was I going to stay? Let me tell you, it was not an easy decision. My internal Resident Critic just had to have his say – no regard for me feeling awful. RC was quick to point out the following:
- You never going to be able to do a 70.3 if you don’t do the training today.
- What will they think of you? Maybe they’ll think you lazy and faking it.
- You should toughen up, take a spoon of cement, don’t be a slacker.
Despite all RC’s rantings, I decided not to go, only trouble is that doesn’t make these thoughts go away. Either decision was going to have troubling consequences. If I went, I may not have been able to complete the ride, slowed my mates down or compromised the safety of my mates and myself. Because I stayed, RC gloats and continues to make me feel like I’ve failed. I’m sharing this with you in case you’ve had similar experiences and have some advice to offer. Perhaps not with regard to training but some other event or activity in your life. What would you do or what do you do when this happens to you?
